Abstract

The project’s vision is to reduce carbon emissions in the construction industry by increasing the use of bio-based materials. The purpose is to develop and test thatched facades in terms of fire safety and to present new combinations of materials and structural solutions that use clay as a fire retardant.
Reed is one of the bio-based building materials involved in the project, as it captures atmospheric CO2 during its growth period. Cultivating reed beds also has a positive impact on the aquatic environment and biodiversity, as the plants absorb nutrients like nitrate and phosphorous from wetlands.The Danish construction industry needs to innovate by focusing on the limitations of our planet, which is why the project can have an ice-breaking impact in its field. The project aims to encourage new project ideas, structural prototypes and partnerships as it envisages solutions spanning types of materials, manufacturing companies and knowledge institutions in the construction industry.
