Biogenic Construction: Thatched building facades for the green transition

Abstract

A short description in exhibition book - of the research project focusing on how biogenic construction can be developed for the green transition of the construction industry.
The exhibition model shows the second version of experiments with thatched facades and integration of clay as a fire-retarding agent. The model has been designed and further developed for the specific venue at the Garagem Sul Architecture exhibition in Lissabon.
The introduction text in the exhibition catalogue says: This project sets out to investigate, how material choices and radical tectonic solutions can act as drivers for a sustainable change in the construction industry, building legislation and architectural practice focusing on surface treatments and construction design. The aim is to provide credible suggestions for CO2 neutral construction types with an environmentally low impact, ‘close-to-standard’ fire-retardant properties, and scalability to an industrial level. Fire-safety is central when aiming to develop absolute sustainable architectural solutions with biogenic building materials. In this context reed is a very interesting material, as it has a fast growth period, it can absorb a range of critical greenhouse gasses, and sustains biodiversity.
