Abstract

Due to new fire-safety regulations in Denmark (January 2020), the use of biogenic materials in construction has met increasing difficulties . Although prevention of fire hazards is a positive action, the restrictive legislation focusing on pre-accepted solutions has led to unintended barriers for the sustainable transition in the building industry. Consequently, these circumstances lock in current unsustainable practices, preventing pioneering and experimental efforts to develop well-needed sustainable solutions in architecture. In other words, the new regulations, which aim to improve fire safety, appear to be showstoppers for the green transition of our built environment, aimed at addressing carbon emissions, material scarcity and biodiversity
