Abstract
Photobook Week Aarhus celebrated its seventh edition from 1 to 4 October 2020. The festival is an open forum for discussions on the photobook as a medium.
Like previous years, Photobook Week Aarhus and Art Weekend Aarhus cooperated and several activities and exhibitions were featured on both platforms.
The festival programme was dedicated to exhibitions and talks about publishing, researching, distributing, buying, trading, and collecting photobooks.
A significant part of Photobook Week Aarhus 2020 focused on the relationship between architecture, photography and photobooks.
The theme of Photobook Week Aarhus 2020 was ‘Seriality, Multiplicity and Repetition’. With this theme, the curatorial team set the stage for a festival programme that focused on the revolutionary methods and concepts of the Surrealists: collage techniques, mechanical manufacturing processes, the optical unconscious, objet trouvés and readymades. Exhibitions and presentations shed light on works of among others Marcel Duchamp and André Breton, whose concepts have inspired generations of architects. Discussions embraced the representation of the city and how, the surrealists used photography and the photobook to introduce new and modern readings of the urban.
The festival programme also included a retrospective exhibition of the books and catalogs of renowned Danish photographer Per Bak Jensen, feature exhibitions on Norwegian photobooks, South African photobooks and Belgian photobooks as well as shortlisted photobook dummies from the 2020 Kassel Photobook Award.
