Abstract

A research based exhibition by Anne Elisabeth Toft and Jesper Ramussen.

The renowned Danish photographer Per Bak Jensen has produced a great number of books and catalogs. Motivated by a particular interest in the being of places, he has, since the 1980s, documented landscapes and urban spaces by means of phenomenological photography. This has resulted in numerous works of a poetic nature that also self-reflexively examine photography and its distinctive features. Seen through the lens of the camera, the phenomenal world often shows itself from hitherto unknown sides. And in the photography of Per Bak Jensen, motifs are revealed that do not appear to be immediately accessible to human perception. The interest in this particular aspect of photography—how it might potentially give us insight into a different or hidden reality—connects Per Bak Jensen with the perception the Surrealists had of photography.
With this exhibition, which brings together his entire photographic oeuvre in book form, Photobook Week Aarhus wants to pay homage to the photographs and books by Per Bak Jensen.
