Biogenic Tectonics: Thatched building facades for the green transistion

Abstract

This research project contributes to our understanding of the potential benefits of applying biogenic materials in building construction by examining how organic materials can be more generally applied in the design of architectural facades. Increased use of CO2-neutral, bio-based materials in building facades precipitates new combinations of building materials, surface treatments, and construction solutions. Biogenic Tectonics develops and tests thatched building facades that are environmentally friendly, fireproof, and scalable to an industrialized level. Clay is tested as a sustainable fire retardant, both applied onto the surface of the thatch and as built into façade’s construction. The focus is on fire safety, as it is one of the key challenges when using biogenic materials in construction. The project included an historical review and critical study of radical construction techniques, of up-front CO2 emissions, of innovative craftsmanship, and testing of its fire protection capacity using full-scale prototypes and construction mock-ups.
