Abstract

The aim of this paper is to look into Danish earthen vernacular heritage in order to discuss, why this seemingly brilliant material went out of use, and whether earth as found in heritage has potential in future sustainable building. Methodology applied is a literature study in order to map and survey different types of earthen constructions comprising wattle and daub, adobes and rammed earth followed by a case study dealing with an earthen heritage dwelling to explore and clarify pros and cons of earth as a material in a coastal climate.
