Denmark has taken over from the Netherlands as the hippest country for architecture in the world. For this reason guest lecturer Jacob van Rijs (MVRDV) has invited a number of leading Danish architects to take part in the annual Capita Selecta lectures. The DK@BK series will start on 14 November with an introduction by Boris Brorman Jensen. 14 November – 12 December 2013 | Thursday from 18:00 to 20:00 location: BK City, Oostserre It is not a complete coincidence that the Danes of all people have taken over the position that the Dutch held in the world of architecture fifteen years ago. A number of them readily admit to being inspired by Dutch architecture. Some were here for their studies or did their internship at a Dutch architecture bureau, such as OMA, Neutelings Riedijk or MVRDV, who all made their name in the nineties. “What we had in those times is now happening there. Tremendously inspiring”, says Jacob van Rijs. He sees clear similarities in the conceptual and non-modernist approach to architectural assignments. 'Copy & paste - and sometimes better', is how Van Rijs’ colleague Winy Maas once described the new Danish architecture. “But that was merely intended as teasing”, assures Van Rijs. It has, just the same, yielded spectacular designs, particularly in Copenhagen and Aarhus. Designed on the basis of one central idea. There are also differences: the work of the leading new Danish bureaus can be seen as playful and less spirited than their Dutch sources of inspiration. Existing Dutch architecture bureaus also profit from the cross-pollination, as an increasing number of collaborative projects are being created in Denmark. The Danish government has set up a respectable architectural policy in recent years, partly modelled on The Netherlands. And it is less restrictive than the policy here. Van Rijs: “The architect has a lot of input there, you are given every freedom.” While there are sometimes extreme requirements for European calls for tenders in The Netherlands – bureaus are not considered for the design of schools, for example, if they have not built one before – they are given that opportunity in Denmark. MVRDV is now active in various places in Denmark. Together with COBE, it built a rock museum in Roskilde, among other buildings. During the Capita Selecta lecture series, seven leading Danish architects will talk about their work. Boris Brorman will give a general overview. One Belgian, Julien de Smedt (JDS Architects), will also be there. He is making a name for himself in Denmark with an office in Copenhagen and was involved in the mountain-shaped complex The Mountain (2008). He also has a Dutch connection: De Smedt is an ex-OMA employee.
