Abstract

The biogenic material reed holds great potentials to reduce the CO2 emissions of construction. But use of the material has decreased – partly due to the fear of fire hazards and strict fire protections standards.
This project aims to develop and test new sustainable construction solutions for thatched building facades that are environmentally friendly and fireproof – and which can be scaled to an industrial level. The project focuses on fire safety, which is one of the key challenges when building with biogenic materials. Different types of clay mixtures are tested technically as environmentally friendly fire retardants in building facades, either as a surface treatment or as clay plates built into the construction.
Research questions are:
• How can we create architecture that contributes to the green transition by use of biogenic materials in construction?
• How can we build in ways where we combine the best knowledge from traditional building culture /crafts with contemporary, effective building methods?
