Beskrivelse
The Shape of Water (2017), an adult fairy tale, just won four Oscars for its love
story between a fantastic creature and a human. However, not long ago fantastic
fictions were scorned. This network joins researchers working with media fictions
(television, film, computer games, literature), human play (real and virtual,
children and adults), and production design in games and films. We join theories
from the humanities with biocultural, evolutionary, and cognitive theories of play.
We view fantastic fiction as offering imaginary play and cognitive meta-thinking,
so-called “what-if” thinking. The network asks why the fantastic has exploded in
contemporary entertainment, how and why we play with – create, design, use,
engage with – the fantastic, and why the fantastic is adaptive and important for
human existence. The network produces an interdisciplinary theory of the fantastic
and will write a large project application.

Nøgleresultater
This network project will 1) join Danish research in the fantastic. 2) We produce
a new interdisciplinary theory of the fantastic linking theories from the humanities with biocultural
and evolutionary theories. This will benefit both international research and Danish creative
industries such as film schools and computer game industries. 3) We arrange an international
conference making Danish research stand out on the global research map. 4) We use participants’
articles (and invited conference papers) to submit an international publication (anthology).

Lægmandssprog
The Shape of Water (2017), en eventyrfilm for voksne, vandt fire Oscars for sit
I dag
