Abstract

Watermill in Tadami is a texture map that describe the surface of a scanned wooden Watermill as an unfolded skin. Recognisable are fragments of wood in a stage between the well-known firmness of the material and the more fluid digital interpretation, where fragments and splinters of wood float in black color. The image shows part of a texture map, which belongs to a 3d modelled fragment of a watermill recorded in Tadami, Japan. The 3d model and texture map are captured on an iPhone 4S using photogrammetry in a digital process implemented with 123D Catch from Autodesk and Adobe Photoshop CS6. This project introduces 3d scanning as a tool for sketching. Where detection and misdetection have equal importance in an investigative approach to draw with the 3D scanning technique photogrammetry. Most often 3d scanning techniques are used for registrations of spaces and objects; the technique provides precise and measurable data for 3d printing and exact representations of the scanned. However, the intentions with these drawings are to explore transitions between existing spatial elements and their digital interpretations.
