Abstract

Working with wood is not a new thing; this investigation focuses on the leftover wood found in the production and processing of refined wooden products.
The work combines fine-grained fibres, sawdust, and powder extracted from the Dinesen mill with wood-based binders. Tree synthesises a new type of materiality from what is normally associated with wood, thus transforming the understanding of how to use this natural material. By taking an artistic approach rather than a strictly technical one, Tree aims to broaden the scope of imagination for wooden materials.
The result is a site-specific work that pays homage to the infrastructure of ducts and piping that is needed to transport and utilize this waste product at the mill, and couples it to the similar objects typically found in the exhibition hall. These formerly generic, mute and purely functional objects are rematerialized using the new sawdust-based materials.
