Abstract
It is widely acknowledged that design processes can seem fuzzy, and designers are often
challenged in accounting epistemically for whatever brings them from nothing to something
- to ‘the ultimate particular’ (Nelson & Stolterman, 2012). In order to explore and explicate
some of the mechanisms underlying design processes, my PhD-study explores evolution of
design processes focusing on ill-defined problems and self-imposed constraints.
This paper presents a hypothetical framework combining and extending existing theories of
Problem Solving based on Reitman (1964), and Co-evolution of Problem/Solution (e.g. Dorst
& Cross, 2001), proposing an alternative representation of design process evolution. The
framework will serve as analytical tool applied to a case study of design processes under
execution, and will thus be examined during further research.
The hypothesized adequacy of the framework is supported by a pilot case study of 23 initial
state design project cases. Analysis of the cases has raised questions with regard to
comprehension of design process in terms of existing concepts. I will briefly present these,
and thereupon introduce the framework.
With this paper, I invite discussion of the framework, which by the time of the conference
will have been exposed to empirical content on which to elaborate and deliberate.
