Skins: cultural approaches to experimental facades designed by architect Byoung Cho

Publications: Contribution to conferencePaperResearchpeer-review

Abstract

South Korean architect Byoung Cho has developed a unique design approach that
draws inspiration from both Asian culture and modern art. The ideas of the architecture and the expressions arise through an experimental search of the properties and possibilities of materials based on an awareness of Korean culture in arts, crafts and architecture, which emphasize the spontaneous and conjures up beauty in imperfection (Mahk). The post-war Korean monochrome art movement (Dansaekhwa), which cultivates a bodily repetitive spontaneity, has also inspired to investigate concrete's random plastic appearance during the casting process and for the repetitive movements of diverse metal facade skins. Likewise, has American minimalism inspired to make precise compositions of pure forms with high material substance. To achieve this precision, structural suspension techniques cooperate in the architectural design.
