Abstract

Since 2014, the Photobook Week Aarhus has been engaged with the photobook in all its facets and has presented a festival programme of international standing. For its 5th anniversary, Photobook Week Aarhus has showed works by renowned artists and promoted established and emerging talents, publishers, curators, printers and booksellers. The festival took place at Aarhus School of Architecture, Galleri Image, ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, Dokk1 and Verpan design store.
This year’s theme, The Virtual and the Physical, focused on digital developments in society and their significance for the photobook. The festival discussed the digitalisation in photography and highlighted concepts such as virtual reality and hyperrealism by looking at their cultural counter-images. The discussion of the festival thus added to the current debate in society about the future of the book after the digital turn.
The programme included Daria Tuminas from UNSEEN, book specialist Thomas Wiegand, photo critic Gerry Badger, Evita Goze from Self Publish Riga, American photobook expert David Solo, Gintaras Česonis and Viktorija Mašanauskaitė from Kaunas Photography Gallery, and photographer Harvey Benge. Events happening during the festival were the digital cave, the Dummy Award Gala and a unique exhibition at the ARoS library.
