Abstract

This essay examines the unsettled history of the Viking Ship Hall, opened in 1969 and designed by architect Erik Christian Sørensen. A publicly accessible exposed concrete structure for the exhibition of five Viking ships from an adjacent archeological site, the building was immediately celebrated for its architectural values and listed less than thirty years after its inauguration. However, technical deficiencies in the building became apparent, and since a storm surge threatened to harm the ships, the future of the building has been uncertain. Through an exposition of acclamations and condemnations, the essay discusses the e!ect of architectural criticism and judgment.
