Abstract

The online teaching module "B4.1_Sunlighting assessment" is part of the educational project "NLITED -New Level of Integrated TEchniques for Daylighting", an online platform containing eModules to improve knowledge of daylighting among students and professionals within the building sector.

The sun is an indispensable natural source to architecture with the potential to contribute to delight, energy, and health. On the other hand, it can also cause overheating and glare – careful studies are needed to juggle between these contradictions. Sub-modules on sunlight basics, sunlight assessment application – calculation and properties and case-studies on architectural sunlight application set the scene and go into engineering and architectural ways to work with sunlight assessment. The aim is to give an overview of what sunlight is, why it is important to work with and give some examples of how it can be done, focusing on sunlight availability, shading and sunlight transmission in relation to building and add-on materials.
