Abstract
A research based exhibition curated by Anne Elisabeth Toft
Reflecting the thematic framework of Photobook Week Aarhus 2023—‘Future Revisited’—this exhibition payed homage to one of the most iconic photobooks of the twentieth century: Amerika: Bilderbuch eines Architekten, Published in 1926 by the German architect Erich Mendelsohn (1887–1953), who played a key role in revolutionizing architecture in Germany throughout the 1920s, the book is today widely considered a cornerstone of photobooks about built structures. It also counts as a very influential volume on modern American architecture. Following the book’s popular reception in 1926, the many images presented in it would have a profound and lasting effect on European perceptions of the American urban landscape.
The exhibition was contextualised by a lecture by the English writer and curator of photography, Gerry Badger on Friday 3 November 2023
