(Note: Not Directly translated)In my PhD project I investigate drawing as a way of making the world emerge. My project is to describe and understand how this emergence takes place, and what it means to see drawing in this perspective. For that purpose I study the praxis of drawing which I try to put into the context of process philosophy (the ontology of becoming).
In art historian drawing research analyses often take their starting point in the finished drawing – in design research in the process and purpose. My project is to develop a theory that makes it possible to understand the relation between image and process simultaneously. That is why my analysis alternate between looking at the image as it appears for the spectator and interpretations of the maker’s process.
As a part of my research I am investigating the works of two draughtsmen, who particularly have worked on drawing themselves into the essence of creation, namely the Belgian author and draughtsman, Henri Michaux (1899-1984) and the Swiss healer, Emma Kunz (1892-1963), who does not fit into any esthetical category like “artist, designer or illustrator”. What brings them together is that they both used quite special – and limited – means to create their drawings.
