Description
Title: Slums, Museums and Urban Transformation in Ilha de Moçambique: From bairro indígena to macuti townThe presentation is a discussion of current PhD research on built heritage in a setting of widespread poverty and a colonial history of segregated cities in Ilha de Moçambique. The official image of the dwelling with a thatched macuti roof changed from "uncivilized" to being a tourist picture postcard in the 1950s. Today there is confusion among the authorities about the role of the "macuti town" in tourism development and heritage conservation, while the population is struggling to get rid of their macuti roofs.
