Description
This is the heading in ”Vers une Architecture” from 1923, under which the above quote is stated. The quote initiates: “Contour and profile are the touchstone of the architect. Here he reveals himself as artist or mere ingineer” .”Vers une Architecture” appear, among more contemporary manifestoes, as the probably most explicit emphasis of Colin Rowe’s thesis: ”To make a metaphor: it might be said that rationalist theory, understood to be a scheme of determinism qua function and technology, had entered into a gentleman’s agreement c. 1922-23 with a grand historical abstraction; and that rationalist theory, perhaps, had not fully understood the consequences.”
Besides this sole point, ”Vers une Architecture” is a high praise for modern times engineering and antique architectural order, said agreement between technologi-cal progress and classical culture, from where the new architecture was appear-ing.
