This zoom lecture is devoted to an investigation of the Bauhaus as a whole, from the early days in Weimar under the leadership of Walter Gropius, over the period in Dessau under Hannes Meyer all the way to its final period under Mies van der Rohe in Berlin. On the one hand, it presents the Bauhaus as an avant-garde movement in art and architecture and discusses how the school was determined by the specific political context in Germany ranging all the way from the first German Democarcy in the Weimarer Republic all the way to the dictatorship of the 3rd Reich. On the other, it it sheds light on the institution to reform the architectural education and production. Special focus is hereby laid on the gender related aspects in the development of the institution and selected individuals.
