IOC-UNESCO launches Ocean Literacy Training for Architects, Urban, Marine Planners, and Designers

Activity: Talk or presentation Lecture and oral contribution

Description

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) has developed a Training for Architects and Urban Planners on Ocean Literacy. The training takes place at the Ocean Teacher Global Academy, the official IOC-UNESCO Training platform, and is designed to support participants to unlock their creative potential by exploring numerous ocean possibilities.

The first edition of the training took place from 15th March to 12th April with two live Webinars about “Design within the planetary boundaries” and “Ways Forward”. The training aims to help students to focus on tools and approaches for dealing with the urban-ocean interface as well as existing opportunities and challenges in the context of the United Nations Ocean Decade for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and the Agenda 2030.

Participants were exposed to a comprehensive learning experience and a wide range of content such as:

- Introduction to Ocean Literacy concept and principles;
- New paradigms for Coastal Cities including Public benefits of the ocean, mangrove planning, coastal erosion, and nature-based solutions;
- The UN Ocean Decade and virtuous examples of Ocean Literacy within the Decade;
- Ocean and people: how humans are interconnected with the ocean with case studies about the city of Venice in Italy, the lifecycle of products, climate adaptation, and design with innovative materials such as seaweed.

A new edition of the training will be open for self-paced students from 12th April 2023. More information about it will be disseminated in the Ocean Literacy IOC UNESCO Channels. http://instagram.com/oceanliteracy_unescoioc/
