Description
The architectural theorist Ray Lucas has suggested that inscriptive practices such as drawing can be understood as “a form of knowledge production […providing] significantly different insights, not easily accessible through textual models of discourse analysis, critical theory, or observation.” This lecture will present a discussion between the works of two architects who employ drawing and mapping as a key form of knowledge production in their practices. Theo Deutinger, through his publications such as Handbook of Tyranny, Ultimate Atlas, and his earlier drawings featured in Mark Magazine; and Deane Simpson, through publications such as Young-Old, Atlas of the Copenhagens, and The City Between Freedom and Security. The architects will reflect on drawing as a practice to explore and decode the instrumentality of the emerging territories, spaces and objects of our times, and their political, economic, and social implications.
