Can Lis residency

Activity: Other activity typesPeriod visiting other institutions

Description

During this residency we highlight the unique relation between geology, extraction, architecture, and the quarry as a landscape of healing or re-use. We study practices concerning the ecologies and cultures of quarrying, use and reuse of marès stone, and the impact of ecologically-informed architectural gestures, such as Can Lis itself.

Following Utzon’s inspiration, we will embed ourselves in the marès-built environment. This occurs in four ways: 1) Inhabiting Can Lis and discussing the tectonic and ecological aspects of its marès; 2) Mapping, video, and photographic documentation of specific quarries and architectural details; 3) Working with local quarrymen and craftsman to experiment with marès stone by massing, stacking, and examining modularity and porosity; 4) Constructing a full-scale, artistic installation in a selected quarry that investigates reversibility, biodiversity, reuse and repair.
