Abstract
The main purpose of this report is to explore and unfold the complexity of the tourism phenomenon in order to qualify the general discussion of tourism-related planning challenges. Throughout the report I aim to demonstrate the strategic potential of tourism in a wider sense and more specifically the potential of ‘the extraordinary’ tourism-dominated space.
As highlighted in the introduction, this report does not present any systematic analysis of strategic planning processes; neither does it provide any unequivocal conclusions. Rather, the report presents a collection of so-called ‘detours’ – a collection of theoretical discussions and case studies with the aim to inspire future strategic planning.
Due to the complexity and heterogeneity of the phenomenon I use a non-linear and non-chronological report format with the ambition to create a new type of overview. In this regard the report is intended as a pilot project which can inform future studies seeking to address the tourism phenomenon from a spatial perspective.
