Abstract
Governments in many countries around the world are currently investing in design
research and design education. In Denmark, a new research-based master’s
programme has been launched at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of
Architecture. The purpose is to give trained designers access to additional
theoretical and methodological training. This article explains the background and
underlying ideas behind this initiative and emphasises the overall necessity of
strengthening the research aspect of the design discipline. The article argues that
the interaction of practical and academic knowledge takes graduates farther than
either professional or academic competencies alone.
