Abstract: The arrival of actor-network-theory (ANT) in urban studies more than a decade ago created fierce conflict in this area of research. For opponents the ANT approach was anecdotal and descriptive, a naive objectivism unable to detect and explain urban dynamics, change and causality. Two conceptions of theory crashed into each other: 1) theory as consistent explanatory system and 2) theory as mobile network of conceptual tools. This contrast resembles the ontological distinction between 1) substance (being as being) and 2) subsistence (being as other) in the thought of Bruno Latour. Crossing this set of distinctions orthogonally with another Latourian distinction – the one between modernizing and ecologizing – this lecture extends such footsteps of Bruno Latour into the conflictual field of understanding the cities of the Anthropocene and the ways in which anthropogenic climate, biodiversity and other disasters can be resisted in urban contexts, including the concept of an emerging ecological class.Periode | 23 maj 2023 |
