Design a contemporary primitive hut as a place for contemplation. In doing so we will investigate the material brick in hands-on experimentations with 1:5 and 1:1 scale models. The primitive hut is a concept in architectural design theory that has been employed to speculate about the beginnings of architecture. Gottfried Semper envisioned it with The Four Elements of Architecture -the fireplace, the earth mound, the roof (with supports), and the spatial enclosure. Each of the four elements was associated with a primordial applied art -ceramics, stonecutting, carpentry, and the textile arts- from which it received a repertoire of formal motifs. If we conceive of tectonic thinking as the complementary understanding of the notions construction and aesthetics, then each of the four primordial applied arts suggests a different kind of tectonics -clay tectonics, stone tectonics, wood tectonics, and textile tectonics-, which can also be combined in various hybrid positions. We will explore the possibilities of these tectonic positions in relation to the material brick. Aesthetics in architecture are more recently discussed with the notion atmosphere. This constitutes a more encompassing, bodily and experiential way to think of aesthetics. In this light, tectonics should always be thought of as contributing to the construction of an atmosphere. Our primitive huts will explore the possibilities of brick in the construction of atmospheres for contemplation.
