Who and what shapes our physical context?

Public talks and discussion on how to diversify architectural histories

All over the world, architectural and urban historians are engaged in diversifying the histories of who and what shapes our physical context. While architectural history has for a long time now connected ideas of creativity with the agency of Euro-American men who are presented as heroes of modernism, and celebrated their built works as canon, there is today a renewed interest in new, more inclusive and accurate histories of our physical contexts. Such histories can pave the way for new imaginaries and alternative futures in which buildings, landscapes and cities can be made, shared and cared for in more ecologically and socially just ways.

At this roundtable international researchers will present short stories that highlight how women, street performers and activists have had agency in the built environment. Further, it will bring to light collective action as an integral, yet often hidden, work-form in architecture, landscape architecture and urban design. Doing so, diversifying architectural histories becomes a project that is inextricably linked to ideas about the present, and the future.

The roundtable offers a rare possibility to be in one of the oldest buildings of the University of Copenhagen: Munkekælderen, a gendered learning space with a multi-layered history that seems well-suited for our context.
