Atmospheric power and politics – in the Latin Quarter of Aarhus

Aktivitet: Tale eller præsentation Foredrag og mundtlige bidrag

Beskrivelse

Abstract: Atmospheres, the sensible interplay of constellations in our environments and our bodily experiences and feelings, are essential parts of urban life. They attract (some of) us to some parts of the city and repel (some of) us from the same or other parts. They can empower us, but they can also exercise power over us. They can evoke strong and contradictory feelings and give rise to political struggle about what kind of atmosphere should characterize a city or a part of the city, and for whom. A few years ago (2017) such a struggle broke out in the Latin Quarter of Aarhus. The lecture tells the story about this struggle and discusses the relationships between the concepts of atmosphere, power and politics in this narrative context.
