Towards a Tectonic Sustainable Building Practice

Publications: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingBook chapterResearchpeer-review

Abstract

Environmental challenges such as climate change and resource scarcity require a fundamental rethinking of architectural design and construction. This text presents the concept of an "ecology of tectonics," which integrates technology, materials, form, and production processes through a holistic approach that connects buildings to broader natural, cultural, and ethical systems. It explores how sustainability, industrialization, and tectonic thinking can be combined to create architecture that is both resource-efficient and architecturally meaningful. Through examples such as the work of Lacaton & Vassal and Richard Murphy, the text highlights the importance of contextuality, material knowledge, and the integration of traditional building practices with contemporary technologies. Ultimately, it advocates for an updated tectonic framework that addresses sustainability while preserving architectural quality, cultural relevance, and material coherence.
