The sandiness of sand

Abstract

Focus on this paper is the exploration of the local sandstone Marés, used by Jørn Utzon (JU) in his construction of Can Lis, Mallorca 1972. This study not only investigates scientific properties but also how it functions as a material deeply embedded in a complex matrix of architectural ethics, aesthetics, and culture. The paper also delves into the way JU’s vision of the material was not purely functional but embraced its inherent properties of decay, allowing the building to return to nature over time. Through a residency 2023, talks with the local architects involved in the restauration and direct observations living close to nature for several weeks in Can Lis, it has been documented that the special and unique atmosphere is strongly related to the porosity and weaknesses of the sandstone. Evidence in the detailing of the house by JU supports the idea that he was aware of this contradiction.
