The Construction Material Pyramid: 'Upfront impacts' as a methodical change in architectural design

Publications: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingArticle in proceedingsResearchpeer-review

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the methodological change in architectural design processes when using a new tool as the Construction Material Pyramid, which offers basic environmental data visualized in a web-based version as dynamic hierarchies. When using the Construction Material Pyramid in the early design phases, the architectural design decisions tend to move beyond the level of material awareness and scrutiny. Eventually it pushes towards a holistic design approach and fundamental tectonic thinking including ideas as Design for Disassembly to prolonging material
longevity, The article will look deeper into how a simple tool as the Construction Material Pyramid can act as a productive means to engage in complex ethical discussions on building technology as a whole, and can help to enhance the central role of tectonic thinking in architectural design processes when pushing the construction industry into reaching more green solutions.
