Abstract

The main difficulty of sustainable design is not the design of a new building but transformation and modernization of existing ones. Warsaw University of Technology (WUT) is one of the oldest universities in Poland. It is spread over several sites most of which – both the urban layout as well as many buildings – are under the care of historic preservation authorities. This substance should in the future years fullfill the requirements of Effective Energy Directive. This paper presents the research project, awarded with a Nordic Finance Mechanism and conducted by researchers from WUT and NTNU Trodheim. The main aim of the project was to implement nZEB principles in two case studies that could act as benchmarks for other public buildings. The transferof knowledge faced multiple difficulties, i.e.: economic limitations, different technical requirements, lack of procedures and management schemes for the Integrated Design Process.
