The Atmosphere, the Tietgen College & the Textile designer

This master thesis deals with the experience from the subjective point of view of the meeting with space and architecture. Textile designers Aggebo and Henriksen have based on their textile background worked with architects Lundgaard and Tranberg in creating the site's unique atmosphere.

The thesis is structured in two parts that create the framework for the overall problem: One explaining textile professionalism and the theoretical explanation of Gernot Böhme and Patrick Jordan. Then an analysis of the case in light of selected theory, which leads into a description of the textile designers' work on the project

The theoretical take-off is Böhme’s "atmosphere" and Jordan's "four pleasures". The base of the thesis is Böhme’s thoughts of atmosphere in which he breaks with aesthetics understood as communication of the arts by formulating a new aesthetic understanding. This sets the atmosphere, the body and the subjective experience at the center in architecture. Because people fundamentally act to the surroundings from the perspective of the body it is therefore essential that the surroundings are able to engage the user. Jordan's "four pleasures" is used to analyze and categorize the emotional content of the case. The analysis shows that the Tietgen College as a place manages to meet the needs the modern consumer has that enables an emotional relation to the product.

The Textile designers' contributions to the College are found mostly in those of Jordan’s categories, which relate to the physical and mental well-being. The designers have based on their textile professionalism, tools and methods acted as co-creators of the college atmosphere. This shows that there are similarities and common values between Böhme’s new aesthetic understanding and the textile designer’s way of working with material in relation to the user and context.
Based on this thesis study, it can be said that the professionalism of textile designer can be used as a basis of working with creating atmosphere in space and architecture, and thereby to create experiences for people who come here on a daily basis.
