Abstract
A new statical and conceptual model for membrane shell structures - the stringer system - has been found. The principle was first published at the IASS conference in Copenhagen (OHL91), and later the theory has been further developed (ALMO3)(ALMO4). From the analysis of the stringer model it can be concluded that all membrane shells can be described by a limited number of basic configurations of which quite a few have free edges.
