Abstract

How can organic materials such as reeds, straw and clay create new ways of building that do not exceed planetary boundaries?

The project explores the physical, aesthetic and ecological potential of organic materials, as these are connected to the planetary boundaries. Full-scale reed buildings have been tested and are presented as structural building elements and prefabricated facade cladding.

The project includes historical analyses, studies of innovative construction techniques, designs that can be taken apart and assembled again, craftsmanship and analyzes of CO2 emissions. The use of reeds as a building material complies with sustainable building principles with respect for the planetary boundaries, where the most important consideration is to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and at the same time promote circular thinking and awareness of environmental responsibility.
