Abstract

‘Rethinking Tourism in a Coastal City’ is an innovation project taking place along the west coast of Denmark and funded by the Danish Innovation Fund. The ambition is to develop tourism and hybrid landscapes through site-specific interventions and new modes of cross-sectoral and co-creative collaboration. Two of the cases developed in this context are a) A collection of transformative architectural design interventions in Hvide Sande harbour, and b) ‘New Nordic noir screen tourism’ project related to two television drama series which are to be shot on the west coast of Denmark. In this chapter, we use these examples to illustrate various approaches and methods for use in transforming and making places. Our main idea is to suggest a different way of developing and branding places. Rather than focusing on flagships, visual icons and brand values, our examples illustrate how the processes of doing, creating and provotyping places can generate a strong sense of ownership and create new ideas and collaborations within the field of tourism.
