Wood as a building material has recently taken on new roles. The technological developments in new wood materials (e.g. CLT) have given wood capacities to enter into new contexts (e.g. high-rise build-ings). Further, the climate-, energy- and resource issues have given wood, in its enhanced configurations, a new actuality as a sustainable and renewable building material capable of addressing these issues. The new configurations and contexts of wood raise unprecedented and unanswered questions of both technical and architectural charac-ter. Especially regarding fire safety—the relation between wood and fire—different agendas and views on materials collide. These tensions confirm the necessity of this dissertation which lies in a shift in the understanding of materiality, from being a concept primarily focus-sing on the human experience with materials or the materials’ physical properties, to being a material-centred notion that can be used about material processes in a decentralised and wider sense, exceeding hu-man perception and addressing material behaviour.

Based on the relation between wood and fire, the dissertation explores how architecture reveals that materials are in a continuous process of becoming. I animate the concept of materiality in architecture in such a way that the material is not only thought of as subjective experience but can be used to explore a broader range of architectural aspects.
Materials are not static. To include their inherent dynamic processes in the concept of materiality opens new aspects, e.g. fire safety and ethics, as part of the aesthetic in architecture.
Based on Deleuze’s idea of aesthetics as the science of sensation, a concept of materiality as sensing is established, constituted through mate-rial experiments, analysis and artistic works; across functions, concepts and sensations. This concept of materiality is seen as more than con-ditions and extensions of a material, as something beyond the senses it triggers in a subject, as something that in itself senses and establishes substance.
Wood, fire and architecture are closely connected through energy. Through an investigation of these connections the dissertation ex-plores which new awarenesses an animated concept of materiality can give rise to.
I argue that these awarenesses open new aspects of architecture to-wards formerly primarily mechanical-technological domains. Material behaviour accesses the physical properties of materials through their behaviour, and energetic dimensions in architecture via their qualita-tive energy systems and open up for thinking towards fire safety of buildings through the aesthetic.

With material experiments at the Danish Institute of Fire and Security Technology (DBI) the project explores fire on three levels: fire as function, the sensing of fire as a form-giving and form-finding pa-rameter and fire as event and space. Analysis of a series of selected cases animates the concept of materiality by enhancing the intensive dimensions of architecture opposite the extensive functions. Senses emerge and are being retained in and through artistic works and they figure as non-discursive elements of the dissertation.

With this the dissertation will present one way to grasp the not directly accessible aspects of materiality. How can these more elusive qualities, such as the hidden wood construction behind the plaster boards or the diffuse porous property of the wood, play an architectural role? How can materiality be expressed? What material architectural dimen-sions does the embedded energy of materials, decisive in the fabrica-tion of materials and for environmental reports, possess? I pose this question, not to give final answers, but to open up and expand the ways in which materials are addressed in architecture – through ex-ploring material behaviour.
