Abstract
The work explores the concept of material (dis)identification as an architectural and political tool to challenge the rigid binaries and normative categorizations inherent in modernity—such as inside/outside, public/private, and nature/culture—which are historically linked to ecological breakdown and systemic exclusion. Drawing on theorists like Paul B. Preciado and Zygmunt Bauman, the authors propose subverting conventional architectural elements (such as transforming walls into gardens, bricks into landscapes, or bathrooms into wetlands) to foster nonbinary ways of living and unlock new spaces of freedom. This conceptual shift is embodied and tested through three visualizations of a fictional living space that physically question and dissolve these traditional dichotomies.
