The UN Sustainable Development Goals as drivers for change: Dilemmas in architectural thinking

Abstract

Problems caused by climate changes and ecological degradation go across the boundaries of disciplines and businesses in construction. Fragmentation of our understanding and management of construction is thus an obstacle to the sustainable transformation needed to reach the SDGs. Thus, we do not build according to the ‘true picture’ of what construction actually costs in regard of resource consumption, CO2 emissions, environmental impact, health and cultural value. But how do we make up the total accounts when we build? Based on selected cases this paper discusses dilemmas in architectural thinking linked to SDGs as drivers for change in the built environment.
