Abstract

Do independent video games exist, and how? By looking at the history of independent game festivals, this paper argues that independent game institutions have gone through
three main phases: 1) an early financially independent phase of focusing on the economic conditions of development, 2) an aesthetically independent phase where independent games acquire a specific style to become a distinct type of video game, and 3) a culturally independent phase where independent games are claimed to embody cultural and political change as well as a more healthy way of developing video games.
