Abstract
Representation is never passive or innocent.
To acknowledge that buildings are intricate entities, constantly interacting with both human and non-human actors, and existing within broader contexts encompassing social, political, and material realities, we envision an expanded visual culture for professional architectural representation. Building on the origins of conventions that emerged from an indexical connection with their signifier, new conventions are proposed to connect with those often-omitted actions and relationships graphically.
The contribution reimagines a technical drawing of a well-known masterpiece, the Aarhus Rådhus, by increasing the amount of information through new notations that address the relational complexity inherent in the built environment. In doing so, an ecological approach to architectural drawing suggests a fundamental shift, challenging the traditional outlines of what a building is, in order to draw what a building “is with.”
