Abstract

Modernist visions and ideals regarding the urban environment gave birth to modern principles of road planning and established the foundation for a clear division between road- and urban planning.
As modernist urban planning experienced a massive critique during the later half of the 20th century, changing both the discourse and practise of urban planning, modern principles of road planning have continued to shape the urban environment regardless of a return towards more traditional urban values. As a consequence, the effect on urban relations following the continued extensions of modern road systems and the associated automobility, tend to be neglected or left unnoticed within the discourse of urban planning.
