Abstract
This essay examines several depictions of construction workers from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries. When placed in front of the critical mirror, they reveal a multitude of prejudices: that workers are compliant, nameless, skilled but not creative, and an embodiment of docile, bodily vitality.
