Abstract
Dance Resonance - Space Drawing
My project explores creation of architectural space in resonant exchange with the art of dance. Unfolded by gestural drivers, the work entwines architectural drawing and move-sensing, using spatial attunement in motion as a central agency. A core objective is to bring body-spatial awareness, including nonhuman contemplations, into creative processes.
Dance is a special artform - you bodily meet the articulated other, recognizable 1 to 1. Our innate sense of movement is crossed by experience of unknown, aberrant dance gestures, evoking forces of liberation. These forces enable both kinesthetic and exokinesthetic multi-sensory awareness. It effects resonance with external and imagined movements thereby dissolving boundaries of subject-object.
Much like space itself, movements are intangible. With dance, the moving body ‘draws’ body-spatial powerlines – it stretches and compresses perception of space. Architecture – with space-markers such as surfaces and openings - ‘draws’ spatial boundaries. To make space 'appear,' you must engage in the markers, reaching out and 'dancing' with them to create a fluctuating resonance of the in-between.
My work employs a live-drawing technique to make in-betweens tangible and present. Twisted by gestural drivers, flow and friction of space-markers/drawing-components expose rhythmical tensions of atmosphere and orientation - aiming at engaging body-spatial resonance and imagination of the drawer/viewer.
