Comprehending bio-based materials

Publications: Non-textual formContribution to exhibitionResearch

Abstract

This exhibit presents a method of teaching bachelor students the foundational principles of material design through hands-on experimentation with biopolymers. We investigate the materials' characteristics, including tactility, aesthetic and formal potential, from a designer's perspective for application in furniture, products and spatial interventions. Students are not only encouraged to be curious and speculative, but also to embrace unexpected results as potential starting points for new lines of enquiry. This method focuses on the crossover between scientific and artistic research approaches.

The method focuses on the interplay between scientific and artistic research, particularly on the 'soft' qualitative results and their artistic potential for the field of design. The experiments provide insights specifically for designers rooted in 'material potential' and allow students to incorporate materials in their design projects from the outset rather than as a secondary concern later in the process.
