Within the themes outlined by the AlterRurality 6 conference this poster presentation addresses the theme of the Farmland.
How can we identify and communicate atmospheric qualities of rural farmland buildings?
The migration from rural areas to the city stimulated by transition of farming from smaller family farms to industrial farms has left a sur- plus of farm buildings and smaller buildings in villages abandoned. These buildings represent not only an important cultural heritage but does also hold values and potentials for future generations to be exploited.
Focussing on the atmospheric qualities of rural farmland buildings I wish to shed light on the possibilities of identifying, describing and hence communicating such qualities to planners, decision makers as well as the general public. The aim is to establish a consensus on the atmospheric values at stake.
Buildings have a lifespan and one day they die. This is only natural and surely some buildings must go as they are either outdated or their program cannot be transformed. However, in rural areas this process occurs more rapidly as the buildings are been abando- ned. Hence it is of great importance to establish an overview of the existing building stock as well as strategies for what to keep and what to let go.
Based on my research on ́Spatial atmosphere and building culture ́, conducted during the past five years, I wish to present a number of ca- ses and propose a methodology on how to identify, describe and hence communicate spatial atmospheres.
