Dimensioning the Out of Field: A contemporary reading of Deleuzian Cinematics

    Abstract

The French philosopher Gilles Deleuze made one of his major contributions to visual studies with the advent of his books on cinema (1983-85). Deleuze’s ‘theory’ of cinema and moving images, however fell short of the digitalization of cinema, and the proliferation of moving images to every stratum of contemporary society through electronic means. We might ask ourselves to which extent Deleuzian cinematics, can be applied in a contemporary context based on an ever-increasing flux of ‘informatic’ images. It is from this initial discrepancy between analogue and digital that this text tries to create new concepts that can grasp the contemporary situation of the moving image within the information society.
